A new study in the Journal of the American Medical Association finds that quetiapine (Seroquel) may be more effective than other antidepressants in treating depression. The drug, sold as the Seroquel® from Eli Lilly, is approved for the treatment of major depressive disorder in adults.
The research, by the University of Chicago Psychiatry and Medical Center and the National Institute of Mental Health, was published in the January 2014 edition of the journalNeuropsychopharmacology.
This study is the first to evaluate the impact of quetiapine on the clinical effects of antidepressants. It also was the first to test the efficacy of quetiapine in patients with major depressive disorder (MDD).
“This is the first clinical study to show that quetiapine is more effective than other antidepressants in treating MDD,” says, a psychiatrist at the University of Chicago School of Medicine. “We wanted to show that this may be an effective treatment for depression, and we also wanted to see whether this would be the first time a drug has been shown to be effective in treating depression.”
The first trial showed that patients taking quetiapine had significantly less adverse events than patients taking a placebo. But they also had significantly fewer side effects than patients taking a placebo, and the difference between the two was statistically significant. Quetiapine’s clinical effects were similar in patients taking and placebo. The researchers then used the data to see if quetiapine’s antidepressant effect might be similar to that of antidepressants.
In this double-blind, placebo-controlled study, the researchers examined the effects of quetiapine in 17 of 25 patients with major depression. They compared the results to the results of placebo and found no difference in the depression effects of quetiapine. “We did not have a significant difference in the depression effects of quetiapine over placebo,” the researchers write in. “However, the antidepressant response to quetiapine was similar in both groups. The depression effects of quetiapine were not different in either group.”
The research team also tested quetiapine’s antidepressant effect on the effects of other antidepressants in patients with major depression. The researchers found that patients taking quetiapine had significantly fewer side effects, including less sedation, fewer nausea, more fatigue, and fewer adverse effects than patients taking a placebo. In addition, the researchers found that patients taking quetiapine had significantly fewer side effects than patients taking a placebo, but there was no difference between the two groups in these side effects.
“In addition, this study provides support for the fact that the effects of antidepressants in depression may be different in patients with major depressive disorder compared to those with depression in general,” the study authors write in.
“Our findings do not support the use of antidepressants for the treatment of depression, and we do not have any specific data to support that,” the study authors conclude.
The researchers hope this study will serve as a valuable source of information on the benefits of antidepressants for patients with major depressive disorder.
“Antidepressants have been studied for a long time in the treatment of major depression for its effectiveness in treating depressive disorders,” the authors write in.
“However, the clinical data for antidepressants used in the treatment of major depression in patients with major depressive disorder do not show significant improvement in the patients’ depression,” they add.
